Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
These rare ceiling lamps were designed by Hans Bergström and produced in the 1950s by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. They exemplify the refined materiality and restrained elegance that defined mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. With a focus on clean geometries and functional clarity, the lamps showcase Bergström’s ability to merge sculptural form with practical lighting requirements.
Each lamp is constructed using a combination of brass and teak. The vertical central rod, formed from patinated brass, is complemented by warm-toned teak fittings, creating a balanced interplay between metal and wood. This material contrast—soft, golden metal alongside richly grained wood—is typical of Scandinavian modernism, where natural elements are harmonized with engineered components.
The design features newly added cylindrical lampshades, which reinterpret the original proportions in a contemporary textile while remaining sympathetic to the historical form. The shades offer a diffused lighting effect, consistent with Bergström’s preference for ambient and glare-free illumination. The overall structure is minimal, with slender profiles and clearly delineated connections between components. The vertical orientation of the lamp allows for adjustable overall height, increasing its versatility in varying ceiling environments.
The brass shows a soft, natural patina, indicating age and authenticity without detracting from the visual clarity of the design. The teak elements remain well-preserved, maintaining their original tone and surface texture. The design measures 77 cm in width, 37 cm in depth, and 89 cm in height (approximately 30.3 inches wide, 14.6 inches deep, and 35 inches high), resulting in a suspended form that is both architectural and refined.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996), co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934, was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers. His work throughout the 1940s and 50s emphasized both aesthetic sensitivity and technical ingenuity. He was known for introducing a wide range of materials and forms, from perforated metal shades to natural textiles, always maintaining a focus on how light interacts with form and space.
Ateljé Lyktan, based in Åhus, quickly became one of Sweden’s leading lighting manufacturers under Bergström’s direction. The firm was instrumental in shaping Scandinavian lighting during the postwar period, particularly through its commitment to craftsmanship and its collaborations with architects and designers.
These ceiling lamps remain in excellent condition, with only minor signs of age-related wear and updated shades.
