Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp or flush mount fixture was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1940s. The lamp features a solid brass stem and canopy paired with an original hand-sewn linen shade. The shade is shaped as an inverted cone with a softly gathered pleated structure, more loosely draped compared to the finely ribbed variations of this model. The linen, in a warm off-white tone, diffuses light gently, accentuating the sculptural folds and creating a warm, ambient glow.
The central brass rod connects the shade to a flared ceiling canopy finished in smooth, spun brass. A brass finial completes the bottom of the fixture. Over time, the brass has developed a natural patina with surface marks and oxidation consistent with the lamp’s age. The original linen shade shows minor discoloration and light wear but remains intact and structurally stable.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996), founder of Ateljé Lyktan, was a leading figure in Swedish lighting design. His work in the 1940s helped shape a modern Scandinavian lighting language that emphasizes material honesty, organic form, and atmospheric light quality. This lamp exemplifies Bergström’s early modernist approach and Ateljé Lyktan’s characteristic blend of industrial precision and handcrafted detail.
The combination of brass and pleated linen reflects the era’s preference for tactile warmth and understated elegance. The lamp measures 51 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height (approximately 20 by 15.7 inches). It is in good vintage condition, with an evenly aged brass patina and well-preserved textile components.
