Hans Bergström ceiling lamps
This very rare ceiling lamp or flush mount was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. It reflects Bergström’s hallmark approach to Scandinavian lighting—an emphasis on simple geometric forms, material clarity, and warm, ambient light. Designed in the mid-20th century, the lamp is a refined example of Swedish functionalist aesthetics combined with subtle decorative detailing.
The lamp features a circular form with a low-profile dome-shaped shade made of opaque white plastic. The surface is gently curved and smooth, designed to evenly diffuse light and eliminate harsh shadows. This creates a soft, atmospheric glow ideal for residential or public interiors seeking understated elegance. The plastic material is thick and evenly molded, providing both structural stability and a consistent luminous quality when illuminated.
The shade is secured by three small brass pegs that pierce through the lower rim, attaching to a central brass ceiling mount. The mount is minimal in form yet highly finished, with a polished golden hue that contrasts warmly with the matte white surface of the diffuser. This restrained combination of materials—white thermoplastic and brass—was typical of Bergström’s postwar lighting designs, where technical innovation was balanced with aesthetic refinement.
The lamp is in good vintage condition. The white plastic diffuser remains intact and free of yellowing or deformation, indicating careful preservation. The brass fittings display a light natural patina and subtle signs of age, consistent with original mid-century production, which enhance the authenticity of the piece without detracting from its visual clarity.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996), founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934, was a central figure in Swedish lighting design during the 1940s to 1960s. His designs often explored the balance between form and light, emphasizing both the physical and atmospheric presence of fixtures. This ceiling lamp embodies that approach, providing not only functional illumination but also architectural softness.
The diameter of the lamp is 40 cm (15.7 inches), with a depth of 25 cm (9.8 inches), making it appropriate for flush or near-flush ceiling installation in both domestic and commercial spaces. Its clean profile and warm light quality allow it to integrate seamlessly into a wide variety of interiors while remaining a strong example of mid-century Swedish design.
