Hans Bergström ceiling lamps
This rare ceiling lamp, model nr 136, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. The lamp is constructed in brass with shades in white opal glass, combining refined craftsmanship with an elegant functionalist approach that characterizes Scandinavian lighting of the period.
The fixture consists of a central brass canopy from which eight bent brass arms extend outward in a symmetrical radial form. Each arm carries a softly rounded opal glass shade with a distinctive vessel-like contour. The shades are attached with small brass fittings, producing a subtle decorative accent while securing the glass to the structure. The combination of the warm brass and the diffused white light of the glass shades results in an even and atmospheric illumination, typical of Bergström’s designs.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was one of Sweden’s foremost lighting designers and the co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan, established in 1934. His work was deeply rooted in functionalism, yet always carried a sensitivity to proportion, material, and light quality. During the 1940s and 1950s, Ateljé Lyktan became synonymous with high-quality Scandinavian lighting design, producing models that balanced industrial precision with artisanal detail. The nr 136 ceiling lamp is a fine example of Bergström’s early postwar designs, where clarity of form and a restrained use of materials created timeless pieces.
The lamp remains in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of age and usage. The brass has developed a gentle patina, while the opal glass shades are well preserved, retaining their original satin finish.
